Bijou – French: Jewel, a small dainty usually ornamental piece of delicate workmanship
Chef
owned, female owned Mom and Pop independent restaurant serving a broad menu of foods prepared in the French tradition.
The husband and wife team of Kerry Even and Candace Winter, both analytical chemists, decided to leave
Hewlett Packard Co. to start their own business in the late nineties. Kerry wanted a gas station and Candace wanted
a restaurant. Candace obtained her third college degree at Ivy Tech in Indianapolis for the Culinary Arts which included
continuing education in Lyon and Paris France. She gained experience working at the Glass Chimney in Carmel and was
the Chef at the Five Seasons Sports/Country Club of Indianapolis. Her love of French cooking techniques stemmed from
growing up in the era of Julia Child – The French Chef.
Being a mildly intelligent man, Kerry
gave in to Candace and the plans for Bijou began to blossom. While driving to Chicago to visit family, a wrong turn
was made putting the couple in front of a building for sale on the square in Lebanon. This 1890 era building was purchased
that weekend and the fun began. The building was completely gutted and restored. A new façade, a newly designed
kitchen, as well as the entire building infrastructure were designed and built. The couple did all interior woodwork,
painting, and tile work and in their spare time developed the menu and designed the computer systems.
The restaurant
opened to great success in November of 1999 and was chosen by the Indianapolis Star as the #1 new restaruant of the year 2001.
Chef Winter’s jewel has been featured twice in the Indianpolis Monthly as a destination restaurant and has even been
written about in the USA Today.
We certainly hope to see you at Bijou.
